The width of a centered passepartout around a framed picture should be about 10% of the length of the longer side of the frame. The picture should leave a margin of 0.5 cm all around to fit in the passepartout.
Example calculation:
- Frame size: 40 × 50cm
- Passepartout width: 5cm (10% of 50cm)
- Passepartout size: 30 × 40cm (5cm passepartout)
- Picture size: 31 × 41cm (0.5cm margin)
To mount the picture into the passepartout, it’s recommended to use acid-free photo corners or archival quality tape. If you do not have any of these, you might use masking tape instead.
How to mount it:
- Place your picture face up on a clean, flat surface.
- Apply a strip of masking tape to the top center of the picture, with the sticky side facing up and half of the strip overlapping the top.
- Take the passepartout and place it over the picture so that it covers the desired area of the picture, and press down on the passepartout.
