Passepartout drawing

Framing pictures: the Passepartout

The width of a centered passepartout around a framed picture should be about 10% of the length of the longer side of the frame. The picture should leave a margin of 0.5 cm all around to fit in the passepartout.

Example calculation:

  • Frame size: 40 × 50cm
  • Passepartout width: 5cm (10% of 50cm)
  • Passepartout size: 30 × 40cm (5cm passepartout)
  • Picture size: 31 × 41cm (0.5cm margin)

To mount the picture into the passepartout, it’s recommended to use acid-free photo corners or archival quality tape. If you do not have any of these, you might use masking tape instead.

How to mount it:

  1. Place your picture face up on a clean, flat surface.
  2. Apply a strip of masking tape to the top center of the picture, with the sticky side facing up and half of the strip overlapping the top.
  3. Take the passepartout and place it over the picture so that it covers the desired area of the picture, and press down on the passepartout.
